AMBITIONS/THE ELEPHANTS OF KENYA #2

An ivory brooch with a silver pin;
Divest yourself of it if you wish to win.

One day I shall visit the elephants of Kenya.
On that day I must be clean of sin

Lest they choose not to greet me,
But rather, decide to keep their distance -

Though I will have eaten vegan for weeks,
And worn nothing made from skin...

[NOTE: (Yes, we write on the fly on subway cars.) This is my second poem guest-starring African elephants - I would love to see them, even if only from afar. What an honor it would be! The reference to the piece of jewelry is an acknowledgment that all too often we must in this imperfect, living world relinquish that which we hold onto in order to receive that which the world is trying to give us.]
